Allegations against Staff or Volunteers (LADO)

Allegations against Staff or Volunteers in the Children’s Workforce

The Buckinghamshire Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) is responsible for overseeing the management of all allegations against people in a position of trust who work with children in Buckinghamshire on either a paid or voluntary basis.

The LADO should always be contacted by a professional when there is an allegation or concern that any person who works with children, has or may have:

  • Harmed a child
  • Committed an offence against a child
  • Behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children

The LADO does not complete investigations but is involved in the management and oversight of individual cases; providing advice and guidance to employers and voluntary organisations, and monitoring cases to ensure that they are dealt with as quickly as possible, consistent with a thorough and fair process. They do not liaise directly with parents or carers.

Managing Allegations against Staff and Volunteers Working with Children This procedure issued by the Buckinghamshire Safeguarding Children Board (BSCB) should be applied when there is an allegation or concern that any person who works with children, has or may have:

  • Harmed a child
  • Committed an offence against a child
  • Behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children

The procedure outlines the action that should be taken in response to such a concern.

Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) Annual Report

The BSCB receives an Annual Report from the LADO service, which reviews data as well as considering performance and quality assurance.
